Clinical Spotlight: Dr. Mandy Steiman, Psychologist

1. Tell us who you are.

Professionally, I’m a clinical psychologist with expertise in the diagnosis of autism, but outside of the office, I’m a mom of twins who loves reading, pop culture, and spending time with my family.

2. What brought you to this field?

Trying to understand human behaviour is fascinating. My interest in diagnosis is probably an extension of being curious and loving puzzles. And also being able to help people and contribute to society, it’s the best job I can imagine.

3. What is something important that people should know about autism and neurodevelopmental disorders?

It’s a big mistake to underestimate autistic and other neurodivergent people. The best clinicians look for strengths and involve autistic clients and their families in their own care.

4. What advice would you give to someone aspiring to become a psychologist?

I started off studying depression in adults, and now work clinically and contribute to research in a completely different area. My advice would be: follow your heart, stay open, and forge your own unique path!

5. If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would it be and why?

This is a hard one! Because I’m reading the Harry Potter series to my kids, I’ll go with the brilliant Hermione Granger. Maybe she can teach me some magic.

6. The ultimate question: pancakes or waffles?

As long as I’m not cooking, either is great!
